Steve Auckland has been reappointed managing director of Metro, taking over from Linda Grant who announced her departure last week.

Auckland returns to the company having previously led Metro in the same role from February 2002 to March 2011.

Kevin Beatty, CEO, dmg media, said of the decision to bring Auckland back: “Steve is well placed to build on the excellent progress made by Metro over the past few years, and I very much welcome him back to our team.”

Grant, who held the role for nearly three years, said in a statement that she was leaving to “move on to do something different.”

During her tenure she expanded the Metro’s digital arm with online editions of the free paper and the relaunch of the Metro.co.uk website, something Auckland said he will continue to build upon.

Auckland said he is "delighted" to be back with Metro. “I know the strengths of the team and I am looking forward to developing the print product further as well as continuing to build on the brand’s excellent digital platforms, especially Metro’s popular mobile app,” he added.

Auckland formally takes on his new role beginning 10 December.
