A survey of more than 15,000 people in the UK has concluded that social media use is contributing to a decline in the amount of sexual activity taking place in the country.

No sex please... we're Tweeting

The survey of adults aged 16-44 found that they were having sex fewer than five times a month.

Dr Cath Mercer, from University College London, said social media and ‘modern technologies’ were behind the cooling of the national libido.

"People have tablets and smartphones and they are taking them into the bedroom, using Twitter and Facebook, answering emails," she said.

The survey is undertaken every ten years. Men and women surveyed claimed to be having sex 4.9 and 4.8 times a month respectively.

The full poll has been published in The Lancet medical journal.
