Pinterest has announced the introduction of new ‘place pins’ to act as a tool for users to explore and share their local environments.

Intended to inspire users to move away from their screens and head out into the real world the service is intended to act as a visual guide to places of interest and things to do.

To facilitate this ‘pinners’ can create a new board based on location to which place pins can be added containing maps, images and related info to bring interesting places together. This can then be shared online to aid vacation planning or to inspire others.

Each place pin is linked to Foursquare’s location API and Mapbox and are mobile compatible, enabling people to keep track of places even whilst they’re on the move – getting directions to their next destination based on location information.
