The Australian federal Parliament has tabled a motion to attempt to secure the filming of the next series of BBC’s Doctor Who in Australia.

Dr Who may be coming to Australia

The motion was lodged by liberal party MP George Christensen, who wore a multi-coloured scarf in honour of Tom Baker’s famed incarnation in the role.

The motion urges the BBC’s partner in Australia, ABC, to secure funding and apply Government resource to entice the BBC to film the program in Australia.

Christensen said the show’s "myriad of connections" to Australia justified the debate, and claimed incumbent Doctor Who actor Matt Smith was in favour.

“All of this culminates in what I think is a good request to the BBC to consider bringing Doctor Who to Australia," he said.

"There has been some support for that at the very top - in fact, one of the executive producers was asked, and she says that she would consider it. She was accompanied by the current Doctor, Matt Smith, who said he thought it would be pretty cool".

The motion was supported by Liberal MP Alex Hawke and Labor MPs Graham Perrett and Andrew Leigh.

ABC1 Controller Brendan Dahill said: "For such a well-travelled Time Lord, we're surprised the Tardis hasn't materialised Down Under yet."

The debate was adjourned without a vote. But the moment has been prepared for.
