A breakdown of profits within the smartphone industry has lifted the lid on the startling degree to which its two biggest players; Apple and Samsung, are able to rake in the vast majority if all profits between them.

Despite haemorrhaging market share to its Android rivals for years Apple continues to enjoy the majority of profits from the sector whilst its South Korean rival benefits from more profits than the rest of the industry combined.

Data released by Canaccord Genuity showed that Apple took a 56 per cent share of all operating profits for all feature phones and smartphones outside China in the third quarter of 2013, just ahead of Samsung with 53 per cent.

Elsewhere the picture was far less rosy with Sony just managing to break even whilst BlackBerry and Motorola actually turned in negative results of 4 and 3 per cent respectively.
