A Google Maps image taken over the town of Richmond, California, has emerged showing what appears to be a crime scene, with police in attendance and a corpse prone on the ground.

The Google image published widely today

The date of the photograph is not disclosed.

Google has been mapping and updating its global image services continually since their inception.

Google observes a strict privacy policy over its published images. Following a prior incident in Brazil, a Google spokesman issued a statement which said that "all images with the bodies were removed" from its mapping service.

“Sometimes that means our cars inadvertently capture odd or inappropriate moments as they drive past,” the spokesman said at the time.

''This is why we have put in place tools so that if people see what they believe to be inappropriate, they can report them to us utilizing the easy reporting tool and also the images will be rapidly removed or further blurring applied.''

The image was published on News.Com this morning, but has been replaced on Google Maps at the time of publication.
