The BBC has brought back Laura Kuenssberg, currently ITV's business editor, to join Jeremy Paxman, Kirsty Wark and Emily Maitlis as chief correspondent and presenter of Newsnight.

Kuenssberg, who was previously chief political correspondent of the BBC News channel before moving to ITV in 2011, will join the on-air team in February, a month after Gavin Esler leaves the show.

“[Laura is] widely admired as one of the most authoritative and accessible broadcasters in the country and has a brilliant nose for a story, as well as a wealth of experience across a range of different areas,” said the recently appointed Newsnight editor, Ian Katz.

"She'll add real firepower to Newsnight's reporting team as well as a fresh and compelling voice to the show's presenter lineup."

In addition to Kuenssberg returning, the BBC also announced that Newsnight's political correspondent, David Grossman, is to become the programme's technology editor.
