As the festive season approaches, Gumtree has updated its iPhone and Android app and introduced a new Facebook app as it looks to capture buyers and sellers hunting for second-hand bargains.

Earlier this month, the classified website rolled out an update to its iPhone app, which was launched in 2012, introducing new features including Paid Categories, Gallery View of Search Results, and Recent Searches.

It also unveiled a new Android app feature which has allowed users to add their postcodes and maps to an ad.

The update comes as the brand continues to see growth in user statistics. In October 2013, the app had over 3.6 million iPhone downloads and 1.5 million downloads of the Android version. In terms of app usage, during the same month there was around one million iPhone users and 620,000 for Android.

The brand has also seen a 20 per cent spike in ads posted in its For Sale category priced around the £20 mark and is now promoting itself as the perfect place to buy a hard-to-find Secret Santa gift with a new Facebook app.

The Secret Santa Solver game locates gifts in your local area priced around £20 and lets buyers find the best bargains by pulling an online fruit machine.

Sam Diamond, head of marketing at Gumtree, explained: “Gumtree is full of second-hand bargains under £20, with everything from classic DVDs to fancy dress outfits to be found on the site. We’ve created the Secret Santa Solver game to help our fans find a cracking present for a cracking price.”

Gumtree’s Secret Santa Solver went live this week and is available on Facebook here.
