Facebook has introduced a redesign of the Like and Share buttons on the social networking site.

The new share options, as revealed by Facebook

The decision was announced on Facebook’s developer blog by the company today.

“Today, we're introducing a new design for both Like and Share to help people share more great content across the web.

“We're already seeing a favorable increase in Likes and Shares with the new design and will be rolling these buttons out to everyone in the coming weeks. If you are currently using the old Like button, you'll be automatically upgraded to the new design as part of our roll out. We've also made it easy for you to include the Like and Share buttons side by side and the Share button by itself.”

“It is about time that Facebook recognised the need for a button redesign,” said Social Business correspondent Eileen Brown.

“There are many examples on Facebook where the Like button is just not appropriate. Liking information about disasters such as Sandy and updates after the plane crash at San Francisco airport might not be the right thing to do.

“‘Liking’ upsetting news makes many Facebookers uncomfortable. But there is no other option.”

She added: “Facebook’s data store is just about to get a whole lot bigger.”

The ‘Like’ button was introduced in 2010. Facebook said that together, the Like and Share buttons are viewed over 22 billion times daily across more than 7.5 million websites.
