US paediatrician group, the American Academy of Pediatrics, has warned that parents should keep smartphones and laptops out of their children’s bedrooms and limit their tweeting and texting in a bid to combat social problems.

Warning: Parents are urged to control kids' media use

Unrestricted media use has been linked with violence, cyberbullying, problems at school, obesity and a lack of sleep, according to the organisation, and parents should take stronger action on controlling their children’s use of devices.

Dr Victor Strasburger, lead author of the new policy, even warned that some teens were ‘guaranteed’ to be viewing pornography.

“I guarantee you that if you have a 14-year-old boy and he has an internet connection in his bedroom, he is looking at pornography,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

The warnings follow recent efforts by UK Prime Minister David Cameron to combat problems posed by children accessing pornography online. In July, he announced that every household in the UK would need to opt-in to be able to view online porn.
