The vast majority of UK businesses do not believe they have adequate security features to protect them from cyber-attacks, according to research.

Figures: UK businesses are at risk, according to the report

Only four per cent of UK businesses are fully equipped to deal with cyber threats, global research from EY showed, leaving 96 per cent at risk.

A lack of budget and skilled resources were cited as stumbling blocks for businesses in the fight against cybercrime, while 28 per cent said a lack of executive awareness or support was a problem.

Mark Brown, information security director at EY, said: “This year’s results show that while businesses are faced with a rising number of security breaches, budget constraints and talent shortages mean that they fail to put in place those systems that match their needs.”

More than half of those surveyed, 52 per cent, said they struggled to assess how emerging technologies were impacting their information security.
