Federal workplace insurer Comcare has issued guidance to government officials, advising them to monitor Facebook and social networking sites to combat public service compensation cheats.

The government is pursuing three fraudulent compensation claims

The guidance is contained in a Comcare circular, "Fraud: What Suspicious Behavior Looks Like."

“Other tell-tale signs that all is not as it seems with an "injured" colleague is spotting them carrying sports equipment on their cars, with surfboards nominated as a particular red flag,” the Canberra Times reported.

“Clothing choices can be a giveaway for compo fraudsters, with work clothes, sports clothes or overalls tipped to attract the attention of investigators,” it added.

The social media monitoring is recommended as a response to 150 allegations of fraud made against workers in the Comcare scheme this year. Federal prosecutors are said to be pursuing three cases.
