Manchester United under fire after 'swastika' newsletter gaffe
Global football brand Manchester United have issued an unreserved apology after publishing a newsletter entitled “New order” bearing a swastika style logo. The newsletter was distributed to its fanbase via email.David Sternberg,(@davidlsternberg) head of media at Manchester United, apologised via Twitter and said an investigation was underway.“The creative is completely inappropriate; we apologise unreservedly and are taking appropriate internal action,” he said.Sternberg said that the design was completely inappropriate, and should not have got through the sign off process. A later statement from the club said: “While the headline was intended to reference the band of the same name, it has been pointed out that the graphic had design similarities to a swastika which, combined with other connotations of the phrase ‘new order’, has caused offence which was entirely unintended. For this, United Uncovered unreservedly apologises.”Elsewhere in the English Premier league, the use of the term ‘Yid’ by supporters and opponents of Tottenham Hotspur has been banned at football matches. The club has adopted a zero tolerance approach to its use.
