Tesco's head of UX for its mobile experience team, Richard Lewis, has stated that he believes more of the supermarket's design and UX work will be handled in house in the future, rather than turning to external agencies.

Speaking at Apps World, where he discussed the need for more collaboration within UX,while also discussing the supermarket's impending grocery app and the central role that UX has played in its development, Lewis stated that he believed it was an aspect of work that needed to be handled internally.

"Tesco is a company that has relied on agencies a lot for its design work and its UX work and what you see today is a different way of thinking that is now starting to take grip within the company as to how UX is absolutely critical orf the app and that all is critical to the success of the business," he stated. "It's been proven time and again and to get that to work in the best ways is to bring that design and UX into the business and getting everyone sitting in the room. There is a movement towards more design and build internally."

Lewis also spoke of the need for UX design to involve other divisions within a company outside of the designers involved but also stated that the most important aspect was that those within the team had "a real appreciation for design."

The grocery app is expected to go live across iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
