Pizza Hut is planning a £60m revamp of its UK restaurants, having revealed a new look restaurant in Crawley today.

Acquired only last year by private equity group Rutland Partners, it is hoped the investment will return the pizza chain to profitability within the next 2-3 years. 80 outlets out of its 300-strong chain will undergo a refurbishment within the next 12 months.

Despite not making a profit since 2006, the brand is not doing away with what first attracted its customers in the eighties and nineties but will instead improve its ice cream factory, lunchtime buffet and salad bar offering. It will however, be making the restaurants open-plan allowing diners to watch their pizzas being made.

Jens Hofma, managing director of Pizza Hut Restaurants, told the Telegraph: “In a way we are making a return to our roots rather than a reinvention.”

The refresh comes as its online arm, spun off last year, announced plans to update its mobile and desktop sites. It is aiming to deliver targeted promotions alongside branded content, with the hope of offering customers a more tailored online experience and driving return custom.
