Veteran crooner Annie Lennox has spoken out over the need to introduce a rating system for music videos to combat the rise of ‘dark’ and ‘pornographic’ imagery.

Such a system, similar to that employed by the film industry, would see explicit material labelled for adult viewing only to assist parents.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Lennox said: "I'm all for freedom of expression but this is clearly one step beyond, and it's clearly into the realm of porn."

"How do you stop your kids being exposed to it? It's so powerful. You don't want to see your seven-year-old girls twerking all over the place."

Lennox’s comments follow a controversial performance from Miley Cyrus at a recent MTV awards bash in which she danced provocatively with singer Robin Thicke and made lewd gestures with a foam finger.

Stars such as Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and Rihanna have all courted similar controversy in recent times.
