BBC director general Tony Hall is to announce tomorrow that the broadcaster is developing a next generation version of its popular iPlayer service, one which will place an emphasis on personalisation for users.

My BBC will offer viewers programming options based on viewing history and will form the crux of the corporation’s digital strategy through to 2022.

In particular this will look at how the public sector broadcaster can rise to the challenge of digital content played on devices other than traditional TV’s and radios.

A renewed focus on content will also be made with a 20 per cent increase in investment and a new arts brand introduced spanning the internet, television and radio to mark a series of partnerships with cultural bodies.

iPlayer has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2007, notching up 234m requests in August, 32 per cent of which originated from smartphones and tablets.
