The Government’s plans to introduce plain packaging on cigarette packages could be revived months after David Cameron was forced to shelve the idea.

The Observer reports that a U-turn may take place over plans which would have seen standardisation of cigarette packaging across the UK, as a result of cross-party alliances in the Commons and the Lords.

Cameron announced that he was to scrap the plan in July, in favour of waiting for evidence from Australia, where the same legislation was introduced last December, before proceeding.

However, cross-party support for the plan continues to grow, which, should it go ahead, would see all cigarette packaging feature only health warnings, and be banned from adding any design or branding, and could see it back on the agenda before the 2015 election.

Last week, The Telegraph revealed that the Labour party accepted “several thousand pounds” from tobacco firm Phillip Morris, to take a stall within the exhibition stall at its Brighton conference .
