Plans by Blackberry to roll out its Blackberry messenger service to Android and iPhone customers have been halted, following a leak of the software.

Having announced the launch of the software last week, the iPhone and Android versions should have been rolled out over the weekend, and while the iPhone version was released, the Android launch has now been delayed.

Luke Reimer, social media manager at Blackberry, said the release of the unreleased version of the BBM for Android app ‘caused issues’.

He added: “Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.

“As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone.”

This trouble for Blackberry comes the week after it was announced that the company is to lose 40 per cent of its workers.
