MPs have given approval for live broadcasts of criminal and civil cases to go ahead in the Court of Appeal.

Live court proceedings to be broadcast

Broadcasts of legal arguments and the final judgment will be permitted from October, the Ministry of Justice said.

It added that victims, witnesses, jurors and defendants will not be filmed.

In Scotland, the Scottish Parliament held an evidence session last year to consider the role of the media in criminal trials, but has not yet moved to legislate to allow live broadcasting.

"Justice must be seen to be done," said England’s Courts minister Helen Grant.

"We are opening up the court process to allow people to see and hear the judges' decisions in their own words."
