Instagram plans on selling advertising within the next year, according to its director of business operations, Emily White, while the platform has reached 150 million monthly users.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, White revealed that the Facebook-owned photography business was likely to begin to carry adverts within the next year as she is tasked with adding a commercial aspect without alienating its user base.

"We want to make money in the long term, but we don't have any short-term pressure," she is quoted as having said.

The service has grown to 150 million monthly users, it has also revealed, an increase of 15 per cent over the last two months, adding around 50 million users in the last six months.
