Sky Sports monopolised its rivals during the final hours of the football transfer window, generating 4,396 posts, while BBC Sport took second place with just 294 posts, research from Radian6 found.

The research discovered that despite – or perhaps because – Manchester United completed only one transfer, the club dominated its rivals by generating 29.3 per cent of total club conversation. It was also found that Marouane Fellaini’s late move to Manchester United was the second most popular topic of conversation, receiving 9,815 mentions.

Mesut Özil was the most talked about player throughout the day, generating 11,103 posts, and his late signing to Arsenal made the team the second most talked about. The confirmation of his move to Arsenal received 2,430 mentions, according to Radian6.

Despite the fact it happened the day before, Gareth Bale’s world record transfer retained the interest of football fans throughout deadline day, leading to 6,529 mentions, with this peaking at lunchtime when he was presented to the Real Madrid fans (1,002 mentions).

Radian6 found that activity peaked between 9pm and 10pm as the deadline approached its climax, with Arsenal’s pursuit of Mesut Özil was the only news to create significant buzz during working hours.
