Oscar-nominated director Alfonso Cuarón’s new science thriller Gravity premiered last night at Venice Film Festival’s opening gala.

The film, starring Sandra Bullock as Dr Ryan Stone, and George Clooney as Matt Kowalsky, was created by London-based special effects firm Framestore, marking its most ambitious project to date.

Every shot of the film, which takes place 500 miles above the Earth’s surface, is CGI-enabled with the entire film choreographed in real time.

Framestore has won Oscars for its work on The Golden Compass, for which it also picked up a Bafta the same year.

It received Oscar nominations for Superman Returns in 2007, The Dark Knight in 2009, and again in 2010 for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.

It also contributed scenes to James Cameron's Avatar, and has picked up Cannes Lions awards for its work in advertising.
