The NUJ, Unite and Bectu have settled a pay dispute with the BBC after the broadcaster made an offer of a £800 pay increase and a one per cent increase on pay grades and allowances.

Deal: The BBC has reached an agreement with the unions

The unions held direct negotiations with the director general and further talks will take place in the autumn. The unions have now dropped threats of strike action.

NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet said the union looked forward to continuing a constructive dialogue with the director general.

“This settlement has been secured in the spirit of talks offered by Tony Hall to address the clear problems that exist with pay for those at the sharp end at the BBC – the committed journalists and programme makers who create the content for the corporation,” she said.

“The union has been one of the many voicing concern at the excessive pay-outs to former executives and the waste caused by such projects as the disastrous Digital Media Initiative, which cost nearly £100m of licence fee-payers’ money.

“It is a positive sign that the director general has agreed to discuss the yawning gap that exists the treatment of content creators and those at the top of the BBC who have behaved so outrageously in the past. It is time the staff, the creative force behind the success of the BBC, is recognised for its hard work, talent and forbearing after the treatment it has previously received from an out-of-touch management."

As part of the deal, the BBC has scrapped proposed changes to redundancy consultation terms and agreed to put plans for changes to anti-social working hours payments out to further consultation.
