A security firm has warned of a virus infecting the Chinese-language website of the exiled Tibetan government which gives hackers control of users’ computers.

Attack: The exiled Tibetan government's site is said to be compromised

It’s unclear who is responsible for the attacks, although a spokesman for the exiled government, Tashi Phuntsok, told Sky News that the government was a “prominent target” for attacks by Chinese hackers.

In a blog, researcher at security firm Kapersky, Kurt Baumgartner said: “At this point in time, it seems that the few systems attacked with this code are located in China and the US, although there could be more.

“This threat actor has been quietly operating these sorts of watering hole attacks for at least a couple of years and also the standard spearphishing campaigns against a variety of targets that include Tibetan groups.

“Our KSN community recorded related events going back to at least a busy late 2011 season.”

The virus works by trying to download malicious software onto PCs used to visit the site which then allows hackers to take control of the systems. The firm has warned people not to visit the site until the bug has been fixed.
