AT&T has seen its smartphone subscribers increase by 1.2 million in the second quarter, ending 30 June, but has only seen modest growth in its revenues.

At the end of the quarter, 73 percent, or 49.5 million, of AT&T's postpaid phone subscribers had smartphones, up from 64 percent, or 43.1 million, a year earlier.

The company sold 6.8 million smartphones, including a record number of Android sales, and smartphones accounted for 88 percent of postpaid phone sales in the quarter.

The report stated that more than 35 percent of AT&T's postpaid smartphone customers now use an LTE device and about 65 percent use a 4G-capable device.

AT&T also noted that smartphone data usage per device was up 50 per cent year on year.

Overall the telecom giant’s consolidated revenues totalled $32.1bn, up 1.6 per cent year-on-year. Operating expenses were $26bn, up from $24.8bn from the same period last year while operating income was $6.1bn versus $6.8bn.
