South Australian state premier Jay Weatherill has issued an apology to an opposition MP after tweets were sent from an anonymous account tracked back to a staffer, which claimed the opponent was in Fiji instead of campaigning in Adelaide.

State premier Jay Weatherill said that he had telephoned Andrew Southcott to apologise.

“When I found out about it, we’ve asked the staff member to make sure that doesn’t happen again. I think it’s wrong and I think it should stop,” he said.

“I don’t think it deserves to be a sackable offence. Some of the remarks that are made on Twitter, remarks that have been made personally about me, are false and defamatory. It’s the sort of thing that should stop,” he added.

He added that Twitter users “should be putting their names” to accounts.

Labour candidate Annabel Digance said: "In relation to a tweet made by a volunteer member of my campaign team, I have now asked that he delete the tweet in question and apologise to the Member for Boothby.

"I understand he has now done so. I have counselled the team member in question. I apologise for any anxiety this may have caused."
