Gumtree con sees woman stump up £800 for two ‘apples’

A 21 year old woman from Brisbane has been left out of pocket after attempting to buy two iPhone’s online – only to receive two edible apples instead.

The con took place when the woman placed an advert in the Australian version of Gumtree for two of the smartphone devices, prompting one caller to respond saying that they had ‘two apples’ for sale.

According to Queensland’s Quest Community newspaper a price of $1,500 (£800) was duly agreed and an exchange took place in a nearby McDonald’s store where two new iPhone boxes were handed over in exchange for the cash.

Unfortunately the purchaser neglected to peer inside either of the boxes as had they done so they would have realised they each contained nothing other than a single green apple.

Online commentators were less than sympathetic to the woman’s plight however with one asking: “I don't know anyone that would hand over $1500 to a stranger without checking the item.

“Besides, you can buy a brand new iPhone5 for $700. So if this is a true story then I'm sorry but she deserved it!'

Another woman remarked: “And she went to the police?? Seriously, I'd be too embarrassed to go to the police if I'd been that stupid.”

Have to say that from what I have read here and seen in another couple of reports, the person described the item as 'two apples' then 'in iPhone packaging' so technically not a breach of advertising standards... Would be fuming if had happened to me tho!
