Google has unveiled the Android Device Manager, a new tool to help you find lost devices and keep the data you store inside safe and secure.

“Have you ever lost your phone in between the couch cushions or forgot it in a restaurant? Or maybe searching for your phone before you rush out the door is part of your morning routine? Later this month, the new Android Device Manager can help you out,” reads the blog announcement.

The new service, which runs via your Google Account, can ring your phone at maximum volume so you can find it, even it has been silenced. And in the event that your phone or tablet is out of earshot, you can locate it on a map in real time.

In the event that your phone or tablet can’t be recovered, or has been stolen, the new tool lets you quickly and securely erase all of the data on your device.

It also comes as an app, which means you can track down your lost phone via a tablet, or vice versa, and will be available later this month on devices running Android 2.2 or above.

The new tool comes after Apple launched a similar tool earlier this year, which has been modestly rated by just over 59,000 people.
