Australia’s media regulator has confirmed it will scrutinise the new code cracking down on the promotion of live sports odds at the end of the season.

The ACMA is seeking "appropriate safeguards"

In May The Drum reported that the Federal Government issued a strongly worded intervention in a bid to clamp down on advertisers promoting betting odds during live sports events.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority registered the code on Tuesday.

"The ACMA worked with broadcasters to enhance and harmonise the codes so they provide appropriate community safeguards for the matters covered by them,’ ACMA chairman Chris Chapman said.

The restrictions include the banning of promoting live odds during play and preventing commentators promoting odds for 30 minute windows before and after a game.

Free TV chief executive officer Julie Flynn said: “Free TV has made a number of changes to its proposal following the public consultation process in April and May.”

She added:"These new rules provide significant community safeguards and will reduce and control the promotion of odds and gambling during live sporting events.”
