Bloomberg Media has named Justin Smith chief executive as it looks to strengthen its digital offering.

Smith has made a name for himself in the publishing industries thanks to his forward-thinking approach to digital. He most recently served as president of Atlantic Media Group where he transformed its digital strategy and reinvented The Atlantic, a 156-year-old print magazine, with its multiplatform offering. Under his six year leadership he also brought it into profitability for the first time and oversaw the creation of digital start-ups, including The Atlantic Wire and Quartz.

Smith will now report to Daniel Doctoroff, chief executive of Bloomberg.

“We know that every part of media is being disrupted by technology, and we need someone who understands that,” Doctoroff told the New York Times. “Justin can drive things forward here because he has an incredibly digital sensibility with a unique understanding of the confluence of journalism and multiple platforms.”

Commenting on working at Bloomberg, Smith said: “If you look at the entrepreneurial roots of this company and its history of market disruption and innovation, I think it is the best positioned media company there is. This is a company where you can take big risks with longer horizons.”

Andrew Lack, who managed the media division for five years, will become chairman.
