Universal’s latest film, Despicable Me 2, has been denied theatrical release in China for currently unknown reasons.

The 3D movie, a sequel to the 2010 hit, has grossed $584m worldwide and has taken $308m internationally since its global roll out earlier this month.

However, China’s State Administration for Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) blocked the family-friendly movie from the country.

The animated sequel follows on from the original film, which was also blocked by Chinese authorities, and sees former-villain Gru, voiced by Steve Carrell, work with his band of ‘minions’ and adopted children to save the world.

Other films to be blocked from China, the second largest film market, this year include Brad Pitt’s Wold War Z.

Universal has not commented further than confirming the reports.
