Yahoo has launched a new initiative aiming to free up inactive Yahoo accounts.

The Username Wishlist has asked people to submit up to five of their preferred usernames, with successful applicants being informed mid-August.

However, before launching the scheme Yahoo had to get round the issue of privacy for the “small percentage” of accounts that would be recycled.

Last month it went through the process of informing users whose accounts has been dormant for over a year that they would be giving away their addresses.

The company has also been working with Facebook to develop and implement the ‘Require-Recipient-Valid-Since’ system that protects the privacy of recycled accounts that were used to set up social media and e-commerce profiles.

The details of this system were revealed on a blog with updates coming over the next few weeks.
