McDonald’s, symbol of capitalist America, is to open a franchise in the heart of notionally communist Vietnam next year with the opening of a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City.

Nguyen Bao Hoang, a son in law of the Vietnamese Prime Minister who once flipped burgers for the chain whilst growing up in the States in the seventies, will run the joint after winning the franchise.

In a statement he said: “I have dreamed of one day opening a McDonald's restaurant in my native country ever since my return to Vietnam more than a decade ago.”

It follows the successful opening of a host of Western chains in the south Asian country; notably KFC, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut and Starbucks.

There are currently over 34,500 McDonald’s restaurants operating in over 100 countries.
