MTV will reveal this year’s Video Music Award nominees using Vine and Instagram videos.

The Video of the Year nominations and others will be unveiled on Wednesday, under the hashtag #RoadToTheVMAs, with videos created by Khoa Phan, a well-known stop-motion animation creator.

MTV, which has 1.37 million Instagram followers and 117,000 Vine followers, hired Phan especially for the task after previously working with him on “beautiful, compelling and highly shareable” video content.

The photo-sharing site has already played a huge part in MTV’s VMAs campaign, after the brand used Instagram photos to reveal the new New York location for the awards. MTV told Mashable it attracted a 250,000 Instagram likes, 16 million Twitter impressions, eight million Facebook impressions and one million Tumblr impressions.

Heather Taylor, VP social@Ogilvy, recently told The Drum how brands, like MTV, can strike gold using Vine and Instagram video. Read her opinion piece here.
