An eight strong committee of Conservative and Liberal Democrat privy MPs has been appointed by the government to put royal charter plans presented by the press industry under the microscope.

The government is giving serious consideration to the newspaper industries plan which would entail the creation of an industry regulator called the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

This body would have the power to impose fines of up to £1m to publishers guilty of ‘serious or systemic’ wrongdoing and is an alternative solution to that tabled by Britain’s three main political parties following the Leveson report.

There are no Labour MPs on the panel which is chaired by culture secretary Maria Miller and chief secretary to the treasury Danny Alexander.
