The billionaire mining impressario and Titanic II builder Clive Palmer has registered a trademark for the name "the Australian Times", hinting at an expansion into news media.

'The Australian Times' trademark has been registered

The Guardian Australia claims to have seen the trademark application, and says the registration opens up the possibility of the creation of online, print editions and broadcasting services under the title.

“It is an interesting, if not altogether surprising move, for the multimillionaire, given his recent tumultuous relationship with the Australian media,” the paper said.

“As well as the lawsuit against the Australian – brought about after the paper published documents relating to his business affairs – Palmer banned a reporter from the paper from a Palmer United party press conference in June, describing the Australian as ‘just a rag’”.

Clive Palmer has not commented.
