Alec Baldwin, star of hit series 30 Rock, has thrown in the towel on Twitter following a public spat with the Daily Mail over allegations that his wife, Hilaria Thomas, had posted a number of inappropriate tweets during the funeral of James Gandolfini.

It follows a grudging apology from the star for a threatening tweet sent in his wife’s defence – in which he warned he would ‘fuck up’ the Mail reporter George Stark, author of the piece.

Stark alleged that Thomas had tweeted a request for ideas for wedding presents whilst the solemn service was in full swing, following up with a request to her fans to watch her on the Rachael Bay Show.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in the aftermath of the fracas Baldwin promised ‘never’ to post on the micro blogging servi ce again after deciding that to do so was a ‘waste of time’.

Baldwin said: “I went to Jimmy Gandolfini's funeral, and when I was there I realised Jimmy Gandolfini didn't have Twitter. Jimmy Gandolfini was so beloved as a person, and he was so admired as an actor, and he didn't give a fuck about social media.

“It's just another chink in your armour for people to come and kill you. I stopped and said to myself, I'm going to try where I just don't do this anymore."

Baldwin previously posted his last ever tweet back in 2011, following an alcohol fuelled air rage incident.
