Virgin Australia has introduced a frequent flyer programme for pets.

The system claims to be Australia's first

The company’s Velocity Frequent Flyer programme now includes family pets, a move the company said was intended to provide a “unique benefit” to its members.

Virgin says it currently flies 30,000 pets around Australia each year.

"The program builds on the unique family benefits currently available to our members," CEO Neil Thompson said.

"We will continue to come up with creative and compelling ways to deliver meaningful rewards and recognition to our members. We know how important their companions are to them.”

Travellers can earn up to 300 frequent flyer points for each pet journey.
