England footballers Ashley Cole, Shaun Wright Phillips and Adam Johnson have all been promoting Samsung smartphones through Twitter, despite not directly revealing the promotional nature.

Cole has tweeted a picture of the three holding the new Samsung Galaxy S4, but failed to state whether it was a commercially motivated tweet.

In the tweet sent on Friday, Cole said: "Got hooked up with the new #GalaxyS4 @TMobile network is quick like me! #SimpleChoice pic.twitter.com/XOkzLjVW4l"

The tweet was then retweeted big Sumsung US alongside the message "@TheRealAC3 We're happy to have you in our league, Ashley. Welcome to the team."

Cole could be pressed to delete the tweet should it be referred to the Advertising Standard Authority which monitors promotional messages sent online, and demands that they are labelled as such.

Interesting comment - how famous do you have to be for it to be classed as advertising? Someone may not be a household name but a big star in an under publicized field (dog shows)...what if the winner of Crufts tweets about a new phone? The owner might be small fry compared to Cole but big if you're into dogs...would it be different if the tweet was dog food related?

Think I went off on one there, but you get the gist.

Pretty sure that if Samsung/Tmobile gave him the phone in return for promotion on twitter that's advertising, fellow commenters. If you go spend your hard earned cash on something you've made an informed choice about then boast away!
