Second screening, the practice of using a smart phone or tablet whilst watching television, has increased 69% within a year.

The second screen, or the first?

More than one in four homes (27 per cent) are utilising four screens, and 74 per cent of digitally connected Australians are regularly second screening.

The figures are consistent with global trends.

“Somewhere between 75% and 85% of TV viewers use other devices while watching, although a lot of these people are doing unrelated tasks – it's startling how many surveys come up with around 60% for the percentage of people who are emailing, which is a telling (and somewhat dispiriting) comment on modern working habits,” The Guardian said when the 2012 second screening statistics were published.

Today’s figures are for the first quarter of 2013, and show that tablet use has doubled in a year from 15% to 31 per cent of homes.

The stats were gathered from OzTAM, Regional TAM and Nielsen data for the television industry.
