Microsoft is hoping to kickstart sales of its flagship Windows 8 software with the release of an update which resurrects the much-missed ‘start’ button.

The test software adds a host of new features to the operating system in an effort to tempt developers to write more applications for it and placate traditional computer users who have been up in arms over the radical changes.

The new ‘tile’ based interface is primarily geared toward touch-based devices but was also included on existing desktops.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said: “Since we announced and shipped Windows 8, suffice it to say, we pushed boldly and yet what we found was we got a lot of feedback from users of those millions of desktop applications.

“If I was to put it in coffee terms, 'Why don't you go and refine the blend here?' Let's remix the desktop and your modern application experience. Let's balance them better.”
