The BBC’s weather app for Android and iOS has pass the one million download mark within two weeks of launching.

According to the BBC, the app has increased its total mobile traffic up from 20 per cent to 25 per cent since its launch, with 84 per cent of mobile traffic over the first weekend driven by its hourly forecast feature.

The first weekend on release also saw an increase of nearly half (47 per cent) in mobile access, with the most popular time for checking the app found to be between 6am and 9am.

Writing in a blog about the early results, James Metcalf, senior product manager at the BBC, admitted that the figures were likely to have been driven by people familiarising themselves with the app and that the rise over that particular weekend was likely due to the changeable weather.

“We see about 28 people per second requesting weather information,” he revealed of the morning traffic, while 25 requests a second were made at around 6pm, a similar level as was experienced on a Sunday evening.
