A replica of the Heathrow Express constructed entirely of cake won’t be meeting many punctuality targets on the congested route but will at least offer travellers first class refreshments, following its creation by a team of 15 specialist bakers and artists.

Conceived as a birthday celebration marking 15 years of the airport shuttle the sweet treat measures a waistline challenging 1.5x4x2m and took over 30 man hours to install in-situ at London’s Paddington station.

The flight of fancy was assembled using industrial cake mixers, copper moulds, blowtorches and spirit levels and is expected to survive until the end of the day before being devoured by hungry commuters.

Keith Greenfield, Managing Director of Heathrow Express said: “Building an enormous carriage-shaped cake with its flavours inspired by the Heathrow Express journey felt like a fitting way to celebrate our 15 years of service. We hope that passengers are able to enjoy a slice as they pass through on their way to or from the airport.”
