Tumblr founder David Karp has spoken out against rivals such as Twitter for publishing follower numbers, describing the practice as ‘really gross’.

Karp made the remark whilst extolling the benefits of his own network, claiming that it is the platform of choice for new creative innovation.

Speaking at the Cannes Lions Festival Karp said: “We don't share stats, so your follower counts, your performance isn't published to the world. You can make little bets and try something small and experimental and not feel any sense of shame if you have only 2,000 followers that sort of thing, which I always think is really gross."

Karp added that Tumblr was a ‘…welcoming place for young aspiring kids to put photography out there for the first time in the world or Lions winners doing their next award-winning campaign,’ before following this up by describing the creative industry as ‘heroes’ before offering some words of wisdom to those considering advertising on his site, be … ‘small and focussed.’

Tumblr was recently sold to internet giant Yahoo! in a $1.1bn deal.
