Childnet International has warned that hackers could be using webcams to spy on people and urged computer users to disconnect the devices when they are not being used.

Warning: Users are urged to switch off when not in use

The charity spoke out following a BBC Radio 5 live investigation which uncovered websites where hackers exchanged pictures and videos of people which had been obtained through hacking their webcams.

Hackers trick people into visiting web pages laced with malware which then allow them to access their computers without their knowledge.

While incidences are said to be rare, Childnet International said webcams should be disconnected from computers in areas such as bedrooms or bathrooms.

An Assocation of Chief Police Officers representative told the BBC that police had come across webcam hacking through cyber investigations and said they could prosecute offenders under the Computer Misuse Act.

The respresentative urged the public to ensure they had anti-virus software in place to block any attempted intrusion.
