Facebook has announced a fresh milestone in its quest to monetise its operations after revealing that it has signed up its one millionth active advertiser.

Comprised predominantly of small business owners this group represents a shift in Facebook’s attentions to smaller advertisers as it seeks to diversify and localise its income stream.

This has been aided by allowing businesses to set up free pages promoting everything from jewellery to clothes, a honey pot which leads to advertising spend down the line.

Dan Levy, Facebook director of small business, said: “Most small business owners start off as Facebook users, then migrate to become page owners, and from there migrate to become advertisers.”

Advertising currently accounts for around 85 per cent of Facebook’s total revenue and in the last quarter the social media giant reported record advertising revenue growth of 43 per cent.

It is estimated that more than 50 per cent of small business owners harness Facebook to promote their products, but only 16 per cent use Facebook ads.
