DreamWorks and Netflix have announced a multiyear deal that will see the animation studio produce 300 hours of original programming for the streaming service.

The move comes as DreamWorks tries to lessen its dependence on the movie business, by instead expanding into TV programming and, according to Business Insider, shows the biggest commitment yet to bring Hollywood-caliber content to the web first.

The episodes will feature past characters from DreamWorks Animations productions, including Shrek and The Croods as well as characters from future releases, and will be available to stream in all territories that Netflix operates in.

Series will also come from Classic Media, which the studio bought last year, which developed characters including Casper the Friendly Ghost and Lassie.

The first of the new DreamWorks Animation programs will appear on Netflix sometime next year, streaming to roughly 27 million US subscribers.

The financial terms of the deal have not been revealed.

In December last year, Disney signed a deal with Netflix which seen it become the exclusive online distributor for new films from 2016, but differs from the DreamWorks deal in that no new content will be made specifically for Netflix.
