Former editor of the News of the World Andy Coulson appeared in Glasgow Sheriff Court last Thursday on a perjury charge, it has emerged, after reporting restrictions banning reporting of the hearing were lifted.

Charged: Coulson appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court

Coulson was driven more than 400 miles to Govan police station last May for questioning on perjury charges. He made no plea or declaration during his private appearance at court and was granted bail.

The BBC and other media outlets challenged the contempt of court order banning reporting on the court appearance and restrictions were subsequently lifted on Tuesday 18 June.

The charge relates to evidence given by Coulson at the perjury trial of Tommy Sheridan in 2010. He is being represented by Richard Keen QC.
