Ruth Harley of Screen Australia will not continue in her role after her term ends in November.

Ruth Harley will step down in August

She announced her decision in an email to staff, bringing her five year tenure to a close, and confirming that she had been forced out by the board of the body, who sought new blood for the role.

"Following discussion with the Board of Screen Australia I am no longer a candidate for the role of CEO. The Board believes that the organisation should have a CEO who is new to the agency to lead the next phase," she wrote.

Board chairman Glen Boreham paid tribute to Harley, stating: “"During the second half of 2013, there will be plenty of opportunities for us to appropriately celebrate and acknowledge Ruth's wonderful contribution to Screen Australia and therefore to our screen industry. However, I did want to immediately recognise Ruth's very strong leadership.”

He added: “As the inaugural Screen Australia CEO, Ruth has led our organisation through a remarkable period.

“We have brought together three former agencies, implemented a new suite of funding policies, and provided strong support to a remarkable industry."

Candidates tipped to succeed her include deputy CEO Fiona Cameron, and New Zealand Film Commission CEO Graeme Mason.
